Nidderdale’s basketball first team took on an experienced Queen Ethelburga’s team this week in a clash at Nidd. The squad was made up of: Liam Mellor, Tom Mann, Harry Dunn, James Shuffley, Bobby Connor, Ali Rogers, Matt Dignam and Joe Wilson.
It was a free scoring game and despite a defeat, the effort and attitude of the team was excellent!
Nidderdale’s basketball first team had their second encounter against Menwith Hill on Tuesday night at home in front of a sizeable crowd made up of both a considerable travelling support and fellow students. The crowd made for a fantastic atmosphere in the sports hall.
There was a real buzz during the warm up and at tip off so it was a shame that Nidderdale started slowly. The Menwith point guard opened the scoring with a dribble and lay up from his own half and it led to a slow first half for Nidd. The second quarter in particular did not show Nidderdale to their true potential making numerous openings but just without the final product of a basket and so went into the half time break 30-9 down.
However after a good half time huddle led from Mr Allen, it was pleasing to see Nidd come into the game strongly. This could be seen from a rushed time out taken from the Menwith coach as he saw his side were rattled early in the third. Nidderdale continued to press the ball well and during the second half got their rewards. Harry Dunn and Liam Mellor were Nidd’s top scorers on the night but other noticeable contributions were made from James Shuffley, Tom Mann, and Joe Wilson. And although Nidderdale were on the losing side this time, there is no doubt some fantastic potential with this basketball team and with continuing improvement and future games against Queen Ethelburga’s (27th Jan) and a tournament against Menwith and Leeds school Carr Manor, there is a real chance for some success in the near future. Well done boys!!!
The final score ended Nidderdale 28-44 Menwith Hill.
Squad: Ali Rogers, Ben Wallace, Ed Corps, Liam Mellor, James Shuffley, Matt Dignam, Tom Mann, Joe Wilson, Harry Dunn, Bobby Connor .
Nidderdale High School students will be enjoying a new cricket kit for the start of 2014 thanks to a fantastic donation from Blazefield Caravans. The new Adidas kit (modelled here by the year 8 girls team above and some of the year 10 boys team below) will make Nidderdale cricket teams look superb and will hopefully give the year 8 girls team the edge in their upcoming indoor cricket tournament on Thursday (9th). Good luck to the girls and to all cricket this year at Nidderdale and thank you again Blazefield Caravan Ltd!!
